2D/3D and High-Resolution Shallow Hazards Assessments

Experience

GEMS’ roots are in 3-D and high-resolution seismic interpretations and the use of this data for conducting geohazards evaluations throughout the world's marine environments. Our shallow hazards team has worked on hundreds of deepwater projects in various geologic settings.

GEMS provides a thorough evaluation of the geologic processes that have occurred in the project area, and an understanding of the impact these processes will have on drilling operations in the upper stratigraphic sections before BOPs (blowout preventers) are emplaced. Our staff takes great pride in developing highly accurate maps, figures, and models to illlustrate the results of their analyses.

3-D data continues to be the primary data resource for exploratory well permitting in deepwater.  Additionally, 2-D, high-resolution geophysical data (including deepwater AUV-collected data) is used in many projects to provide very high-resolution ensonification of the seafloor, and greater detailed analyses in the foundation zone.

Capabilities

Our staff offers a wide range of capabilities and specializes in the following:

  • Assess seafloor conditions and stratigraphy, and geologic processes to evaluate well site locations
  • Identify shallow gas and shallow water flow potential
  • Interpret and map geologic constraints, such as faults, gas vents, seafloor depressions and mounds, and any other geologic phenomena that are detectable with seismic data
  • Identify potential chemosynthetic communities, archaeological sites, and man-made infrastructure and debris
  • Assess mooring spread, anchor locations, and foundation zones
  • Produce supporting maps to show water depth, topography, shallow structure, and seafloor and shallow geologic conditions and features in an area that may have an impact on drilling
  • Prepare final reports needed for permit application to governmental and insurance bodies

GEMS can take a hazard study a step further through our integrated studies and cross-disciplinary teams, by supporting the field development design and installation processes after discovery. Check out our Integrated Geoscience Consulting Services for more information on these types of projects.
